Jesse Liberty has posted the continuation of his previous mini-tutorial on Data Binding.

    Source: Jesse Liberty's Blog

Insurrection on this series! Fair enough, it is based on the quite legitimate complaint that the mini-tutorials were too mini and not enough tutorial. To make up for this deficiency, this mini-tutorial will cover steps 2 and 3 described in the previous mini-tutorial: creating the form and basic data binding.

In the next couple mini-tutorials on Windows Phone 7 starting with this one, Jesse Liberty is going to discuss Data Binding.

    Source: Jesse Liberty's Blog

Databinding is a somewhat advanced topic, typically covered in the second or even the final third of most Silverlight books. We’re going to tackle it in the next couple mini-tutorials because

    • It isn’t difficult to understand
    • It isn’t difficult to implement
    • It is critical both to most applications and to the principal design pattern used with Windows Phone: MVVM
Here are the previous posts from this series:

    • Windows Phone From Scratch Mini-Tutorials #2: Silverlight vs XNA
    • Windows Phone From Scratch #3 – First Project

In Part 3 of 4 of his series on styles in Silverlight, Gergely Orosz explores some further advanced topics like data binding, change notification, declaring styles in code behind and some other useful notes on styles.

This article is part 3 of 4 in a series covering everything that I think is worth knowing about styles in Silverlight. The previous parts of the series are Styles in Silverlight: an Introduction and Styles in Silverlight – Inheritance, Precedence and Other Advanced Topics.

Building enterprise applications with Silverlight almost begs for rich data binding features. While Silverlight 2 already had an extended set of features available to enable data binding, Silverlight 3 and 4 add on these and extend the databinding platform. In this webinar, we’ll start with a complete overview of the data binding features Silverlight 4 has to offer. We’ll take a look at how data binding is the enabler for applying the MVVM (ViewModel) pattern and commanding as well. Finally, we’ll open Blend and see its support for data binding, including the use of design-time data.

    Main topics to be covered:

    • Data binding explained
    • Binding single elements and collections
    • The importance of INotifyPropertyChanged and INotifyPropertyChanged
    • Binding modes
    • Silverlight 4 BindingBase properties
    • Validation, IDataErrorInfo and INotifyDataErrorInfo
    • Data binding as the enabler for MVVM and commanding
    • Binding from Blend 4
    • Using design-time data features

Participate in our post-webinar survey! Give your evaluation on the quality of the webinar topic, and how well it was presented. The three webinar attendees who provided the most constructive feedback will get a free ebook copy of Gill Cleeren's book “Silverlight 4 Data and Services Cookbook”!

A contestant in the BALL Watch Silverlight Contest sent a request to Michael Scherotter and asked him how to data bind to the day of the week. The solution according to Michael is to create a value converter and use that in the binding.

I create value converters so often in my Silverlight and WPF development, that I created a C# item template that I use over and over in Visual Studio.  I’ve posted the item template to the Visual Studio Gallery so you can use it too.  The Visual Studio Gallery is integrated with Visual Studio 2010, so you can install and start using the template right from Visual Studio.
